| Ploumilliau,
Plouzélambre, Ploubezre or Plouaret, many of Tregor
communes are written with the prefix " plou"
which means " parish " in the breton language.
Plouaret used to be Saint Barvetparish, not to be
confused with Saint Barbara, the saint who replaced Saint
Barvet some time later. The first name was Ploerbarvet or
Plebs Barvet, found for the fist time in 1270 in a
clerical deed. Plouaret was spelt Plebs Barbate,
Parrochia, Plebis Barbate, Plebs Barbata, Ploearvet
become Plouaret at the end of the 19th century. In the
beginning, Saint Barvet or Barvoet was worshiped in the
parish, now it is Saint Barbara sainte Barbe in
french- who is honored. It seems that the substitution
happened as early as the 16th century. Geographically speaking, Plouaret parish included for a while : le Vieux- marché,Plounévez-Moëdec and Lanvellec. The communes broke away during the 19th century. In 1886, a decree was issued that le Vieux Marché would become independant. Before this time, the parishes were dependant upon the diocesan bishopric of Treguier .We owe the foundation of the parish church to the saint John hospitallers. These monk soldiers owned a monastery in Prat Ledan in Plouaret and the local people were ruled for centuries by the local aristocracy. Plouaret will have to wait until the 1790 revolution to have an elected local council. But it didnt happen without a few problems. We werent in the same situation as in Vendée with the royalists insurgents called " les Chouans", but the historians mention a rising against the french revolution, the rising stemmed from the mandatory conscription, the rebellion spread to the neigbouring communes and ended on the 12th of May 1794 by a sentence to death for six men. Plouaret coat of arms can be described as follows: |
|
|
Band of gold and sable of six
pieces To a silver vaired frank quarterings and gules .Several seigniories composed the old Plouaret nobility. The family Keranrais were located in Plounéez-Moëdec. The family Guernachanay has left its famous manour. There were also the domains od Keramborgne, Kerdoualen, Pont Blanc and Kermelec. In 1481, a Reunion took place in Treguier, it was in fact a meeting of men at arms which recorded the presence of 14 Plouaret noble men. |
